Esta cancion habla acerca de la crisis economica que tuvo el estado de pennsylvania, estados unidos en los comienzos de los 80's. La industria metalurgica era la mas grande los u.s.a. Hasta que llegaron los japoneses y se apoderaron del mercado. Me relaciono mucho con esta cancion por que lo mismo sucedio en mi pais (mexico); donde los precios tan bajos del acero , mandaron a la bancarrota a la fundidora de fierro y acero de monterrey, n.l.
Bueno, aqui estamos en allentown
y estan cerrando todas las fabricas permanentemente
y alla en bethlehem (belen) se la pasan matando tiempo
llenando applicaciones y haciendo lineas
bueno, nuestro padres pelearon la segunda guerra mundial
se pasaron los fines de semana en la costa de nueva jersey
conocieron a nuestras madres en el USO (organizacion que proporcionan entretenimiento a los soldados en tiempos de guerra)
les preguntaban si quisieran bailar con ellos
y bailaron con ellos las canciones mas despacias
y aqui estamos viviendo en allentown
pero se quizo apagar la desesperacion
y se esta volviendo tan dificil quedarse aqui
y bueno, aqui estamos esperando en allentown
por aquella pennsylvania que nunca encontramos
por todas esas promesas que nos hicieron nuestros profesores
"que si trabajabamos duro"
"que si nos comportabamos"
y ahora los diplomas esta colgados en la pared
pero en realida nunca mas nos ayudaron, para nada no,
por que nunca nos dijeron la realidad
hierro y coke (un tipo de carbon que se usa en la fundicion de hierro)
y acero cromeado
y aqui estamos esperando en allentown
pero se han llevado todo el carbon del suelo
y la gente del sindicato se han alejado arrastrandose
"todo nino tiene una buena oportunidad"
"de llegar cuando menos tan lejos como su padre"

y es muy dificil mantener a un buen hombre oprimido
